🚴‍♂️The Biggest Bike Rental Frustrations – And How We Avoid Them at Café Vélo

We’ve rented bikes in many countries over the years — most experiences were great… but not all. And nothing spoils a holiday faster than a poor-quality bike or bad service. So, based on our own experience (and a few stories we’ve heard), here are the biggest frustrations people face when renting a bike (and how we do things differently at Café Vélo Algarve, or at least try to!).

1. Poor Bike Quality

Worn tires, loose chains, squeaky brakes — it’s hard to relax when your bike doesn’t feel safe. Some rental shops buy cheap second-hand bikes and run them until they literally fall apart. Our bikes come (new) from well known Spanish brand Orbea and and are regularly inspected, and maintained with care in Duas Rodas Bike Store in Loulé. Of course, things can go wrong — but we do everything we can to minimize the risk.

2. Not enough bikes available

It’s true: no one wants rows of unused bikes sitting around, but that can mean limited stock in busy months. That’s why we recommend booking early and sharing your size in advance. We’ll reserve your bike — and if the weather turns bad, you can cancel for free.

3. Overpriced rentals

Paying too much for a creaky bike is frustrating. We believe people are happy to pay a fair price for good bikes and genuine service. At Café Vélo, the price you pay reflects quality, maintenance, and care — and if you ever need help outside our opening hours, we’ll do our best to assist you.

4. Lack of accessories or safety gear

No helmet, no lock, no charger, a half empty battery to start with… — that shouldn’t happen. We include essentials like helmets, locks, a water bottle and even a gps free of charge. All our bikes have (very cool!) rear and front lights for extra safety.

5. Missing information

What if something goes wrong? What do the buttons on the e-bike do? We always take time to explain everything before you ride and are just a call or WhatsApp message away if you need help.

6. Poor customer service

We’ve all met the grumpy rental clerk on holiday. That’s not us. Café Vélo is run by us, personally — no staff, no middlemen — so every customer matters and every experience counts.

7. Booking problems

Reservations can get lost, especially during busy times. To avoid that, we always confirm bookings by email before your rental date. If you don’t receive a mail, feel free to send us a new mail, or contact us via whatsapp or our social channels. Sometimes in busy times, mails can be overseen or end up in the spam folder.

Renting a bike should be part of the fun — not a source of stress. At Café Vélo, we keep things simple, honest and personal. Come ride with us and see the difference yourself.
