Self-Guided E-Bike Tour in the Eastern Algarve: What to Expect

When most people think of the Algarve, they picture packed beaches, golf courses and resort hotels. And while all of that exists — the Algarve has another side entirely. One that most tourists never see.

We built our self-guided e-bike tours to show you exactly that: the quiet, sun-baked interior of the Eastern Algarve. Think narrow roads lined with orange and cork trees, hilltop viewpoints without a single other tourist, lakes that shimmer in the afternoon heat, and whitewashed villages where time moves at a different pace.

Here’s what a typical ride from Café Velo looks like.

What’s included in your E-bike rental?

Every rental at Café Velo comes with a pre-programmed GPS — so you simply follow the route, no planning or phone-staring required. We include a helmet, a bike bag, and a full briefing before you set off. Our e-bikes do the climbing for you, which means you can focus on the scenery instead of your breathing.

The self-guided Route: Castro Marim and beyond

Our most popular loop is a 2–3 hour circuit starting right from our café in Vila Real de Santo António. You’ll ride through Castro Marim — home to a medieval castle and one of the Algarve’s most important nature reserves — before heading into the rolling hills inland. The route brings you back along quieter roads with views across to Spain and the Guadiana River.

Who is this E-Bike Tour suitable for?

Is this e-bike tour right for you? If you can ride a regular bike, you can ride ours. The electric assist handles the hills, so fitness level really doesn’t matter. We see everyone from retired couples celebrating a holiday to young families looking for a half-day adventure away from the beach. The only requirement: a sense of curiosity about what’s around the next corner.

A note on the GPS: we pre-programme the routes ourselves, based on roads we’ve ridden dozens of times. Every turn is marked. If you go off-route by accident, the GPS recalculates automatically. You genuinely don’t need to think about navigation — just ride.
