E-Bike Rental Vila Real de Santo António

Absolutely. We keep the check-in quick and hassle-free. You pay for your rental, sign a short liability waiver, and we take a copy of your ID for security — that’s it. We also take a few minutes to explain the bike controls, show you the GPS route, and answer any questions before you head off. Most people are on the road within 10–15 minutes of arriving.

No. The price you see is the price you pay — no hidden fees. Helmet, lock, bike bag and GPS with pre-programmed routes are all included. The only optional extra is a repair kit for mountain bike riders, available on request at no charge.

Rentals are per day. You can pick up your bike from 9:00am and return it before 18:00. That gives you a full day to explore at your own pace. If you’d like to extend your rental to a second day, just let us know and we’ll check availability.

Not at all. We give every new rider a short briefing before they set off: how the motor assist works, how to change the assist level, and how to use the GPS. We use Orbea e-bikes, which are known for their intuitive controls and comfortable handling. And if you want to prepare in advance, we’ve written a full guide on how to ride an e-bike for the first time. The short version: it’s exactly like riding a normal bike, except the hills suddenly feel very easy.

We rent Orbea e-bikes (trekking/city style with a mid-motor) in sizes S, M and L, and Orbea mountain bikes in S/M and L. We chose Orbea deliberately — they’re a Basque brand that develops and tests many of their bikes on the roads and trails of Spain and Portugal, so they’re specifically suited to this kind of terrain. They’re the choice of both amateur and professional cyclists, and they’re maintained by our partner workshop Duas Rodas in Loulé. You won’t find cheap, poorly-maintained bikes here.

Yes — and it’s one of our favourite routes. Castro Marim is about 5km from VRSA and easily reachable by bike. The route passes through flat riverside roads and then climbs gently toward the medieval castle with panoramic views over the Eastern Algarve and into Spain. It forms part of our standard 2–3 hour self-guided GPS loop. You can check all our routes on the routes page.

Very. The Eastern Algarve in particular — the area around Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim and the Guadiana River valley — has quiet roads, gentle gradients (or easy climbs with an e-bike), and almost no traffic if you stay off the main N125. The landscape changes constantly: orange groves, cork forests, wetlands, hilltop villages and river views. It’s completely different from the crowded coastal strip and genuinely one of the best-kept secrets in southern Portugal for cyclists.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal — temperatures between 18–26°C, dry roads, and very little wind. Summer is also popular, but we recommend starting early (before 10am) to avoid the midday heat. Winter is mild and often perfectly rideable — the Algarve averages around 300 sunny days per year. We’re open year-round, and our Good Weather Guarantee means you can always reschedule for free if the weather lets you down.

Because couples and groups rarely have the same fitness level — and that’s completely fine. In our experience, one person wants the electric assist and an easy, enjoyable cruise through the landscape, while the other wants a proper workout on a mountain bike. Both can follow the same GPS route at their own pace and meet up along the way. It works beautifully. We also offer a mixed combo price — ask us when you book.

Our Good Weather Guarantee has you covered. The Algarve gets around 300 sunny days a year, but on those rare rainy days we offer a free cancellation or a free rebooking to another date, subject to availability. Just contact us by email, WhatsApp, or stop by the café. No stress, no lost money.

Both — and that’s the whole idea. You’re free to just pick up your bike and go. But if you want a specialty coffee, a fresh homemade juice, one of our Belgian beers, or a full meal on the terrace before or after your ride, you’re very welcome. The Breakfast & Bike (€55 with e-bike) starts with our chef Roselien’s signature breakfast platter — bread, croissants, eggs, yogurt, fruit and Belgian waffles — plus a fresh juice of your choice. Then you head out on the bike and return it before 18:00. The Bike & Brunch combo works the other way: ride first, then come back to a full brunch or lunch platter with a gourmet sandwich, cheese, ham, salads, soup and juice. See our full menu for details.

We have three sizes in e-bikes (S, M, L) and two sizes in mountain bikes (S/M and L). As a general guide: under 1m60 → size S; 1m60–1m80 → size M; over 1m80 → size L. All bikes have adjustable saddle heights, so there’s some flexibility. When you book online, you can fill in your height and we’ll have the right size ready for you.

Call us and we’ll do our best to help quickly. Changing a tyre on an e-bike is technically tricky, so if possible we’ll bring you a replacement bike. Experienced mountain bikers can request a repair kit at pick-up and handle it themselves — usually the fastest solution on the trail. We’re always reachable by phone during opening hours.

To be transparent: most bike rental companies worldwide do not include personal insurance for riders, even if they don’t say so explicitly. At Café Velo, the rider is responsible for the bike during the rental, as explained in the liability waiver. We strongly recommend having personal travel insurance — most standard travel policies cover accidents, personal injury, and even equipment. We brief you on the bike before you leave and are always reachable if anything comes up.
