⚡How to Ride an Electric Bike (even if it’s your first time!)

“Help! I’ve never ridden an electric bike before!”
No worries — you’re far from the first. Many visitors try an e-bike for the first time during their Algarve holiday, and by the end of the ride, they never want to go back. At Café Vélo Algarve, we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and confident before you hit the road. Here are our best tips.

Feel the Weight

An e-bike looks like a normal bike, but it’s heavier because of the motor and battery. Take your time when mounting and dismounting — you’ll get used to the feel quickly.

Try the Buttons

You’ll see a small display on the handlebar. These control the power and battery levels. Start in the lowest assist mode (usually “1″ or 1 arrow) until you get used to the gentle push of the motor.

Choose the Right Gear

The more assistance you use, the faster your battery will drain. On flat roads, level 1 or 2 is usually enough. Save the higher assist for hills — and don’t underestimate the Algarve; some roads climb sharply for short stretches!

Speed Limit

A standard e-bike supports you up to 25 km/h. That’s a comfortable pace to explore and enjoy the view. If you want to go faster, you’ll have to pedal a bit harder or find a nice downhill stretch.

Shift Smart

It’s tempting to rely only on the motor, but don’t forget to shift gears — especially when starting or climbing lower the gear tot 2, 3 or 4. It makes pedaling easier and saves your battery. On a downhill you can shift to 8 or 9.

Practice Braking

E-bikes accelerate faster and weigh more, so they need stronger braking. Ours come with disc brakes that perform perfectly — even in rain (which, luckily, is rare here!).

Start Easy

Don’t jump straight into busy traffic. Try your first ride on a quiet road or cycle path to get familiar with the feeling.

Ask Us Anything

Not sure about the buttons, gears, or charging? Just ask! We’ll happily explain everything before you set off.
